Who the escorts were

Contrary to escorts today, escort girls in the ancient times, apart from being attractive, had to meet several criteria, such as being witty, educated, and familiar with contemporary politics. For this reason, the ancient escorts were highly esteemed and respected as well as glorified for their beauty and intellectual qualities in poems.  Men would yearn for escorts, and they almost competed to win the favour of escorts.

Yes, in ancient times, buying escort service was a privilege for which men had to compete by buying a lot of presents to impress the sex worker even before they would agree to meet. And if the escort was willing to meet the client it was not for sure that she would give her charm to the buyer.

Escorts used to have a big role in political life as well. They were influential, with having a lot of well-known people of importance in their circle of friends, so clients would often pay a visit to get important information and advice from escorts.

To better illustrate the power of escorts in the Greek city states, let’s mention one of the most influential escorts of the time, Aspasia (480-400 BC), who was in close relation with one of the main politicians of the city of Athens, Pericles. The influence of Aspasia, the famous luxury escort, had to be understood that she was able to have a say in the daily politics. Based on this historical fact, the ancient escorts had the chance to get in high social position if they were talented and skilled enough. It would not work nowadays. Let’s just think about it. What would happen if an escort girl had an open affair with a politician? It would certainly be a game changer at an election. Just think of Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky. Monica didn’t even have to be a prostitute that the secret relationship and the oral intercourse would break Clinton’s political career. In contrast, it was a status symbol for Pericles that he could have an affair with one of the most famous escorts of the age. Otherwise, Aspasia was also remembered and reflected by the great thinkers of the age in their works, such as Aristophanes and Plato. So perhaps it is understandable that the escorts of the age were hard-to-reach and even more difficult to conquer celebrities, without the stigmatization of being prostitutes.

The formation of escort trade and its separation from prostitution was the result of the feminine ingenuity and smartness as well as the openness of the age. And it is also to be considered that escorts revealed a new market niche that created a new profession (escort trade), making distinction from those of their counterparts who were simple prostitutes. Last but not least, they casted the seed of a new profession from which the present form of the escort trade was formed.

Furthermore, other possible causes of the formation of the escort trade could also be the typical circumstances that usually make today's escorts do escort services. Such is the money, and with it the desire for success, the desire to break out of poverty, and the creation of a good material existence. The last reason for becoming an escort was, unfortunately, very difficult to access today, to have their names written in history books.
